Sanjay Dutt - unfoutunate again

Sanjay Dutt has been found guilty of possessing an AK-56 rifle and a 9mm pistol under India's Arms Act. Whole morning I have been keeping a tab via on-line news regarding Dutt Jr. court appearance today. To tell you the truth with the success of his recent films, regular television interviews and numerous rounds of holy places - I actually believed that he would be let-off by the Indian courts.

A special TADA court has passed a verdict on 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case. Actor Sanjay Dutt has been sentenced to six years imprisonment for his involvement in the serial blasts.

Dutt
was in tears when the judge announced the verdict of this case. While in today’s court proceedings judge said that Dutt had committed a series of offences and he was mature when he committed these.

The judge also added
that Dutt made Yusuf Nalwala commit the offence. Dutt's aide Russi Mulla, who helped to destroy the firearms, was given a suspended sentence of one year, in view of his advanced age and behavior under the offenders of the Probation Act. He was fined Rs 1 lakh.

According to judge, Dutt was present at a dinner party attended by Dawood Ibrahim. Dutt was convicted under the Arms Act for illegal possession of weapons, was facing between five years and 10 years in jail. He had spent 16 months in jail as an undertrial in 1994.

Gandhi My Father - Anil

"What a glorious coming-home it was for Mahatma Gandhi!" said producer Anil Kapoor about the world premiere of Gandhi My Father in South Africa held this weekend. The South African president Thabo Mbeki made the time to watch the film.

Anil couldn't hold back his tears when President Mbeki spoke about Gandhi and saw the film. There were three screenings held simultaneously. Says Anil, "Though I had watched the film earlier this experience was something else. Because my cast – Darshan Jariwala who plays Mahatma Gandhi, Shefali Shah who plays Kasturba and Akshaye Khanna who plays their son – were not treated as actors but the characters. Because the foreigners didn't know who our actors were. So they addressed the three actors as Gandhi, Kasturba and Harilal."

Now after the South African experience Anil Kapoor feels Gandhi My Father is his most special experience in the movie business. "It's gone beyond any of my expectations. Gandhi My Father has taken on its own life. I don't know where this film is taking me. I'm interacting with people who would never have been accessible to me as a conventional Mumbai actor. When President Mbeki said that he'll show Gandhi My Father on the Ivory Coast I felt I had got the biggest award of my life. He feels the film might bring together the warring factions on the Ivory Coast. I feel the film is going beyond boundaries now."

Anil Kapoor will be having no more premieres of Gandhi My Father. "There was only one premiere of the film. And that was at South Africa. Now I'll have screenings in Delhi, Mumbai and worldwide. I repeat, the only world premiere for Gandhi My Father is in South Africa."

Is Mallika just 26?

There have been countless debates over many months about Bollywood’s favourite sex bomb Mallika Sherawat’s real age.

While a prominent news channel questioned Mallika’s talll claims of ‘being very young” by digging into her history and exposing her past credentials which included her airhostess job at
a certain age and her failed marriage, another one very recently talked about how Mallika lies about being 26 when she is actually 36.

This big question and controversy about Madame M’s real age just refuses to die down. There have always been contrary reports of her age in the media. At times she is 26-28 and at times 35-36. After almost succeeding in hiding her marriage, now it seems Mallika is hell bent on putting her real age under wraps.

Mallika is the front runner here, but she is not exactly alone. Bipasha Basu has convinced everyone that she is 28, while a school junior of hers from Bhartiya Vidya Bhavan, Kolkata who is herself actually around that age says, “Bipasha was my senior in school and at least three years older than me. I don’t know how she suddenly cut down so many years”. That makes dear old Bips almost 31!

Wannabe sex kitten and queen of sleazy cinema Sheryln Chopra claims to be only 22, where as sources claim otherwise. ‘Sherlyn has been 22 for many years now”, jokes a source.

Well, there are only a few examples. There are not many (like Ash and Tabu) who admit their age blatantly. For the rest, it all boils down to Indian woman being ‘oh so conscious’ about their ages.

On the other hand, Hollywood divas Madonna, Salma Hayek, Halle Berry, Naomi Watts and co might have admitted to heir ages but that hasn’t belittled their grace, charm, appeal and appearance in any way. Our desi ladies might have emulated them in as many ways as possible but this leaf out of their book has still not been taken and will not be for long, by the looks of it.

Who can say no to YashRaj - Payal Rohatgi

Nobody from Bollywood would ideally say no to an offer from Yash Raj Films. Especially if it’s small time actress Payal Rohatgi who was last seen in an item number in Corporate. So when she was offered a role in Yash Raj Film’s Tashan starring Saif Ali Khan, Akshay Kumar and Kareena Kapoor, why didn’t she figure in the film? Payal, surprisingly, blames it to her good looks.

Says the actress, “I don’t think anyone can say n
o to Yash Raj. I was offered a cameo in Tashan opposite Saif Ali Khan. I had a meeting with the director of Tashan (Vijay Krishna Acharya) and I was looking forward to work with them. But I don’t know what went wrong because apparently they thought that I was looking prettier or much better in real life presently and felt that they could offer me bigger and better roles in future. This was the feedback I got from my manager.”

Payal accepts that she had done some B-grade cinema in the past but doesn’t want to associate herself with such films anymore. She prefers to do less work but good cinema. After her last film Corporate, Payal has been away from the limelight for a while. “Right now the phase in my career is such that I am trying to breakaway from the bad cinema or the hard image that I was earlier associated with. I want something on the same lines like Dhol being offered to me. I am just working on my dance. I do a lot of Kathak. Technically Dhol is my only film that’s coming out. I travel for shows and it keeps me busy” she adds.

Have you seen my website? - Akshay kumar

Have you checked www.akshaykumar.org One phone call to Akshay Kumar and the actor would test you: “Have you seen my website? Check it and then call me. We’ll talk more.” Kumar insisted that his web page was checked before he was interviewed. Log on and you’ll know why.

It has two sections: Akshay before 2000 and Akshay post 2000, apart from notes between the phases which read like Post-its left by an ailing actor. Sample this: “Is this a slump phase in my career? Why are my ‘affairs’ being talked about more than my movies? At least I can do my own stunts.” Bollywood’s most bankable hero does not need reassurance at the moment, but Kumar says reading these lines tell him where he is coming from.

“I’ve been to the moon and back. I now know I can act and be funny. But when I see my earlier work, I want to cringe. That wasn’t me,” rattles the 39-year-old.

Kumar, who had a gamut of big films over the past year, Mujhse Shadi Karogi, Namastey London, Bhagam Bhag and Jaan-e-Mann, had started the multiplex-moolah trend, when he signed a first four-film deal with Adlabs. Now, with Sajid Nadiadwala’s much-awaited Heyy Baby due for release next month, Kumar is the most wanted star in the industry. But the hesitant hero is wary.

“Don’t say I’m a big star yet. I’m just starting. I want to laugh my way to the box office. Just wish me luck,” he says.

From this July until next, Kumar’s call sheet has as many as five probable blockbusters, which include two Yash Raj Films. There are Tashan, directed by Victor Acharya, Shaad Ali’s Tevar, Vipul Shah’s Singh The King, Rohan Sippy’s Mera Naam Chin Chin Chin and Nagesh Kukunoor’s Tasveer. Kumar will also be teaming up with Hollywood star Salma Hayek and Irrfan Khan for producer Bunty Behal’s film. Apart from this, Kumar flies out next July with Amitabh Bachchan for a world tour with an itinerary of 35 shows.

Director Shah, whose Namastey London has recently been added to the Oscar library, is all praise for Kumar. “Some actors bloom in the profession while some are born stars. Akshay came with no godfathers and no training. He used his success and failures to carve himself into a performer,” says Shah, adding that ‘King Khiladi’ may replace ‘Khan kings’.

The men credited for Kumar’s khiladi avatar, Abbas-Mustan, are also amazed. “When we cast him in Khiladi, he was a nervous wreck. He told us to give him few dialogues and more action,” says Abbas. “And now he’s an ace at comedy too.”

Well, Kumar is having the last laugh.

Box Office - Partner & Naqaab

This Friday will see the release of David Dhawan`s Govinda, Salman, Lara and Katrina starrer, `Partner`. Given that the music has become quite a rage, the good to reasonable advance and the charm of seeing the two stars, Govinda and Salman(who have given David his maximum hits) together, the movie is expected to open big at the box-office.

Some do's and don'ts you need to follow while watching PARTNER…

· Lock your brains in the almirah, before you head for the nearby movieplex to catch this zany entertainer.

· Don't look for logic. Don't ask questions. Don't raise eyebrows. .

· Don't argue with what the master chef David Dhawan serves on your plate. .

Do carry some earplugs/earwax if you're allergic to noise. The cineplex will reverberate with high decibels of laughter, which could tax your ear-drums if you're overtly sensitive. . Welcome to PARTNER, David Dhawan's new comic caper. It's stylish, it's crazier, it's a bigger entertainer than David's last two laughathons, MUJHSE SHAADI KAROGI and MAINE PYAAR KYUN KIYA. Making people laugh is an art and David has mastered this art over the years. Like wine, he has only matured with time.

The Abbas-Mustan directed Bobby, Akshaye and Uravshi starrer, `Naqaab : Disguised Intentions`, failed to get the expected good opening. A section of the trade feels that the movie has a script that is difficult to comprehend and the end too radical. However, all is not lost as there was a pick up noticed, as the weekend progressed.

The best thing about Naqaab is that it's just two hours long.

The incredible thing, though, is that it still manages to overstay its welcome -- with a climax lathered on and on, the final twists merely being the facts that the film isn't over yet. Or yet. Or yet. Sigh.

For all that, Abbas-Mustan (credited in the film's titles as Director Duo) have done their fair share of contrived countertwisting. The proceedings are breezy and while nobody really cries bloody murder -- this isn't really a thriller -- the film is never tedious and the actress is pretty.

So yeah, it's watchable.
